Essaouira murex

Murex are sea shells of the Muricidae family, known for their bright colors and elegant shapes. In Essaouira, murex are often used to manufacture purple dye, a traditional color used for clothing and fabrics.

Making purple dye from murex was a common practice in the region for centuries. The shells were collected from the coast and opened to collect the glands that produce the purple pigment. The glands were then crushed and mixed with other ingredients to produce the dye. This practice contributed to the economic prosperity of Essaouira for many years.

Today, the production of purple dye from murex has declined, as it has become more expensive and less practical than synthetic dyes. However, murexes are still an essential symbol of Essaouira's culture and history. Visitors can see examples of purple dye and murex shells in the city's museums, as well as in souvenir stores and local craft workshops.
